Hundreds of items can be recycled at curbside or a local depot. For materials accepted at the depots check out all the accepted materials and fees. For the items that are accepted in curbside recycling totes, check out the curbside recycling educational guide. If you have a specific item in mind, you can search for disposal options using the Cowichan Recyclopedia.
Bings Creek Recycling Centre in Duncan, Peerless Road Recycling Centre in Ladysmith, and Meade Creek Recycling Centre in Lake Cowichan are open year round for recycling and garbage disposal.
The program is paid for by user fees and no taxes are used.
All eligible residents are required by bylaw to participate in the curbside pick-up program and cannot opt out. This ensures that costs per household are kept as low as possible and broad participation is encouraged. Only those with Farm Status on their property may request an exemption from the program. Call the Recycling Hotline at (250) 746-2540 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to request an exemption (must be able to supply Notice of Assessment showing active farm status).
Find your curbside collection schedule here. You can also access and download your schedule to your calendar through our Cowichan Recycles App [AK1] available in the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
If you've built a new house in an Electoral Area, you will automatically be put on the pick-up program. New totes will be sent to your home about 2 months after your insulation inspection is completed. You will get a standard 240L blue tote for recycling. If you live in an area that receives garbage pick-up from the CVRD, you will also get a 140L black tote for garbage. Different tote sizes can be requested in advance by calling the Recycling Hotline at (250) 746-2540 or emailing email@example.com. Annual billing will begin upon substantial completion of your insulation inspection.
To change or add a tote, you must reside in one of the Electoral Areas. Residents in other areas should contact their municipality for more information.
Standard black garbage totes are 140L which are adequate for most homes. Standard totes can be exchanged for larger or smaller totes for $25. Garbage totes larger than the standard 140L size will be subject to an additional annual service fee to ensure that all users pay their fair cost for garbage disposal. Fill out and submit this tote exchange form to obtain a new tote.
