Illegal dumping comes at a cost to everyone in the Cowichan region. Illegal dumping causes environmental damage to our forests and waterways and health and safety risks to visitors and residents. The CVRD is asking for your help to stop dumpers by reporting information to the Ministry of Environment RAPP hotline.
Remember, if you see someone committing illegal dumping, do not endanger yourself by approaching. Instead, record and report identifying information to ensure the person responsible will be caught and fined.
Illegal Dumping Prevention
Strategies to prevent illegal dumping focus on making it difficult for people to dump material illegally and encouraging residents to bring waste to the appropriate location. Many illegally dumped items are free or low-cost to recycle or dispose of at regional recycling facilities. Check out the Recyclopedia for disposal information for hundreds of items, or call the Recycling Hotline at 250.746.2540 for more information.
One of the best ways to deter illegal dumping is by keeping areas clean. It’s been proven that areas with lots of litter and dumped garbage are more prone to illegal waste disposal activity. If your community organization or charity is interested in organizing a community clean-up, you may be eligible for free garbage disposal at a CVRD Recycling Centre.
